On Thursday, August 31, Investe São Paulo held the 2nd SP Conecta, an event that brought together various innovation support agents, corporations, funding entities and international organizations to assist startups free of charge at the headquarters of Investe São Paulo, at the Technology Park of the state.

This year’s edition featured a connection area with 42 support institutions and seven startups in the morning, where entrepreneurs were build networks, ask questions and exchange ideas. In parallel, two presentations and two panels were also held.

The presentations were given by Josep Buades, from Catalonia Trade & Investment, who spoke about the programs available for startups related to the smart management of cities in the Spanish region of Catalonia, and John Lim, vice president of operations of Fenox Venture Capital.

The regional edition of the 2018 Startup Worldcup in South America took place in the afternoon. Organized by Fenox Venture Capital, the global competition evaluates startups from any segment around the world in regional competitions that lead to a final competition in Silicon Valley, where the winner wins a US$1 million dollar prize and mentoring. This year, the judging panel chose TruckPad, a platform that facilitates the relationship between independent truck drivers and the companies.

This is the second edition of the event, which was attended by 40 exhibitors in 2016. The new version focused on the internationalization of businesses, with the presence of several chambers of commerce and foreign diplomatic organizations interested in developing joint actions with Brazilian entrepreneurs.

“We have heard a lot about the importance of creating an action that brings together the entrepreneurial community of the state in a simple and direct way, favoring new ideas and leveraging business. It’s a unique opportunity,” said Sérgio Costa, director of Investe SP. The investment and export promotion agency is associated with the Department of Economic Development, Science, Technology and Innovation of the State of São Paulo.

The novelty this year was the promotion of the regional edition of the Startup World Cup, which promoted its selective stage in Brazil. The global competition evaluates startups from any segment around the world in regional competitions that lead to a final competition in Silicon Valley, where the winner wins a US$1 million dollar prize and mentoring. Organized and funded by Fenox Venture Capital.

“We need to make it easier for more startups to be born with the goal of competing in international markets. In addition, we want the entrepreneurs to get to know more about the programs and the support that the organizations present in the state of São Paulo can offer. In this sense, the event and SP Conecta Map are available for our state to grow in the international ranking of startups,” says Franklin Ribeiro, Investment Manager at Investe SP.

The vice governor and state secretary of Economic Development, Science, Technology and Innovation, Márcio França, praised the initiative: “Investe São Paulo is once again fulfilling its role of shortening the distance between public and private entities, combining interests and favoring economic development – this time through the revolution promoted by startups.”

SP Conecta emerged from the need to create new connections between entrepreneurs, incubators, accelerators, academics, associations and governments to accelerate the development of startups from São Paulo. In addition, the intention is to bring startups closer to large companies and innovative corporations.

The action also culminated in the creation of the SP Conecta Map, a collaborative tool where institutions that foster innovation register their information, thus making it easier for them to be found by those who need them.
